- Hallo Tim, Katharina ist die Urgroßmutter meines Mannes. Sie ist die Tochter von Joh.Evang. Breyl und Rosa Dirr. Sie hatte jedoch noch 9 Geschwister. Matthias, geb. 1843, Josef, geb. 1850 und Joh. Georg geb. 1852.
- Hello Tim, I was looking on the internet for the parents of Willem Breyl and Catharina Maria Viervant. (Thanks :-)) Don't be shocked but Jacobs was not the only child. There are 12 children of them. You can look at the names written as BREIJL. Thea Wesseling, The Netherlands, 9 August 2008
- Hello, Timm. My name is Oliver Breyel. I would like to provide just some facts for the Breyel family tree. Oliver Breyel, born 10.01.1963, Mettmann, Germany. - Here follows information on the lineage of Willem Breyl. Willem Breyl born 6 Feb 1781 in Westerkerk, Amsterdam, Netherlands. He died 22 July 1855 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. He was a reverend in Utrecht, and knighted in the Order of the Lion of Netherlands, on 1 June 1841. He married Catharina Maria Viervant, born 28 April 1784 in Haarlem, Netherlands. - We have traced our BROYLES/BRILES (and other spelling variations) back to the BREYEL families in Ötisheim and Dußlingen, Germany. I did a search on MapQuest! for Merdingen and Wyhl and find that they are way down in the southwest corner of Germany. That's quite a ways from the Baden-Württemberg area and just wondered if you have records for your branch of the BREYEL family back to where our BROYLES/BREYEL ancestors came from? Or, maybe it's the other way around -- we have always heard that the BREYEL/BRUEL/BRUHEL/etc. name originated in France, and that some of those people migrated into what is now Germany.
Somewhere on my computer I have an email from a very distant cousin in Germany who researched the French deBruhl family, and found the origins of that family. According to "tales", none documented as yet, descendants of this family eventually left the area that is now in France, and migrated into areas of what now Germany. The reason that last sentence is couched that way is that at the time, as I'm sure you know, Germany didn't exist as a unified country, and the regions of present-day eastern France and western Germany were either French or "German" as the results of wars and battles dictated.
Now, since your ancestors are from an area that is almost on the present-day French-German border, and since I know that for many years that area was considered French, it is entirely possible (probable?) that your BREYEL ancestors came from France to "Germany", and later migrated eastward and north- ward to the area from which came my ancestors. In fact, go north from the two towns you mention, and a little westward, and you'll find Saarbrüken. I have seen several documents concerning Saarbrüken when it was "French" -- ruled by France, with French government officials, and even French army units.
The upshot of all my wanderings and meanderings is that we are constantly looking for links of our BREYEL (or however it was spelled in "Germany") back to eastern Germany, and eventually to France. I would LOVE to see what you have on your Matthias BREYEL, and see if we can establish a common connection. We have our line researched back to about 1600, and your data might help us connect back even farther.
I did a search on Ancestry.Com for "Matthias Breyel" and found only one entry. It was for a "Matthias Breyel", born 27 FEB 1843 in Wyhl, Baden, Germany. It was posted by Tina J. Kutschbach who is apparently researching the KUTSCHBACH surname, but who has a link to Matthias BREYEL.
There is no one on Ancestry who has researched back past your "Matthias". We NEED to tie these family branches together! Any help will be appreciated, and I'll give you any data I have! Yer Cuz, George W. Durman
- First of all I really would like to thank you for sharing your information about the Breyel family -- "American branch". On the "European branch", I would like to inform you that there is a small town in Germany, close to the Dutch border that is called Breyell (with two 'l'). I also found out that in the Northern part of Belgium -- close to the Dutch city of Maastricht -- there is a castle that during the Middle Ages belonged to Teutonic knights. This castle was ruled during the late 16th century by Ritter von Breyl (with one 'e'). Christopher Breyel (brother of Sarah-Ann Breyel), Brussels, Belgium, 8 April 2002
- Very nice! There are 3 Breyels in Brussels, Belgium. My brother, Christopher Breyel was born on 27th February 1974 in Dusseldorf, Germany; and I was born on 22nd March 1977 in Celle, Germany. We live in Brussels with our mother, Jacqueline Breyel-Fossaert, born on 17th May 1945. Our father, Peter Breyel, born on 2nd May 1940 in Celle, Germany, lives in a small village called Nievelitz, Germany. This web site is great. Thank you. Sarah-Ann Breyel, Brussels, Belgium, 5 April 2002
- I was married to Clifford Joseph Breyel. I did some extensive research on the family line and have most of my records. I have visited Wyhl and Merdigen, Germany. Have several photo's of the area, some OLD photos of the Breyels along with descriptions of "what they took with them to Amerika"… the cost of items they purchased along the way, etc. Cheryl Breyel, 19 September 2001
- Just happened upon your website. Found it to be most interesting. My Briles line is from the (Johannas Broyle/Breyhel) line that came to Virginia in 1717 from Wurttemburg. It has been traced back as far as Johannes Breiel, born 1596 in Dusslingen, Wurttemburg, Germany. His son was Martin Bruel, born 1622 and his son was Conrad Breyhel, the father of the emigrating Johannas. All of the different spellings were found in German church records. It makes sense that we are likely related. Thanks for sharing! J. Briles, 3 September 2001
- Thank you very much for further information on your Ancestors [Andreas Nutt -- grandfather of Catherine Carolyn (Nutt) Breyel] I visited your homepage and would like to make a compliment. I haven't seen such a homepage with such a lot of information on a family before! Paul Vogt (Landesarchiv Liechtenstein) 22 July 2001
- There is a book on the town history of Wyhl that I picked up when I was there. In this book, I believe it stated that Matthias (Breyel) emigrated in 1886, but will trust the work you have done. It also had other stories in it. One interesting tale was of the last witch burned at the stake in Germany. She was a great aunt of ours. According to the legend, she caused all the cows' milk in the town to sour but hers, and when a fire came it completely skipped her farm. Also in the legend, when the Constable asked if she had any final words when she was tied, she spit in his eye and blinded him. This may or may not be factual, but makes for an interesting story nonetheless. We appreciate the work you have done. Clifford J. Breyel, 16 August 2001
EDITOR'S NOTE: I have this book in Denver, Colorado
- I got this website from my aunt. I am the grandson of Henry and Mary Breyel. My grandfather Henry Breyel was your grandfather's brother. I'm very hapy that someone did all this research on our family. Jim Roberts [son of Martha (Breyel) Roberts], 12 August 2001
- So fascinating. Generose Breyel Selva e-mailed us when she found out all the research that had been made. If we can be of any help let us know. Henry Breyel, 6 August 2001
- I applaud you for your efforts, it is quite extensive. Thank you for taking on the monumental task - it was something I had envisioned tackling at some future time. You have just made my work sooooo much lighter. Bill Wuensch [son-in-law of Generose (Breyel) and Carlos Selva], 3 August 2001
- Fantastic family history!!! Alice (Woodiel) Craft, 12 July 2001
- I found in documents from 1627 from the village records of Ekeren (8 miles north of Antwerp, in Belgium), that a certain Jacques Breyel and his wife Catharina van Veltwijck sold a castle in that village to his nephew, also named Jacques Breyel, son of his brother Boudewijn Breyel. The father of Jacques and Boudewijn Breyel was also named Jacques Breyel. Probably, these Breyels are not from you or other American branches. I am not a Breyel. I live in the village of Ekeren, and am very interested in local history. Greetings from Belgium. Wim D'hooge, 2 June 2001
- I was doing some late night surfing for "Joseph Schnurr" and got a hit on your site. The site shows a lot of time and energy has gone into this project. Great work. Regards from Canada. Gerry Schnurr, 31 May 2001
